Open Studio artist, Peter Sprague, an accomplished American jazz guitarist, was awarded the “NEW JAZZ WORKS” 2018 grant from Chamber Music America, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Peter Sprague and his ensemble were chosen as one of nine jazz ensembles through this “NEW JAZZ WORKS” program, which supports the creation of new works by professional U.S.-based jazz artists and helps assure that these compositions will be heard through live performances and recordings. A total of $310,000 was awarded to these nine jazz ensembles, and over $800,000 was awarded in various award categories.

Peter Sprague will compose the piece, and it will be written for guitar, violin, cello, and percussion.

This is Peter’s second time being awarded this grant. His first time was in 2010, and the award led to his composition and recording of “Dr. Einstein’s Spin.” Check out Peter’s blog about receiving this honor.

Peter currently has two courses at Open Studio.
